O Level Maths and Additional Maths Books in Pakistan: What to Buy
Maths is the one O Level subject where the textbook matters least and the practice matters most. Nobody has ever improved at mathematics by reading. That said, some books set better questions than others — and for Additional Mathematics, the choice genuinely matters.
O Level Mathematics
• Cambridge O Level Mathematics Coursebook, 3rd Edition
• Hodder Cambridge O Level Mathematics, 2nd Edition — one of our best sellers
The Cambridge Coursebook follows the syllabus most tightly and its exercises are closest in style to the real paper. Hodder explains methods more gently and is the better choice if maths is a weak subject rather than a strong one.
Additional Mathematics
• Cambridge IGCSE and O Level Additional Mathematics Coursebook, 3rd Edition
• Cambridge IGCSE and O Level Additional Mathematics, 2nd Edition (Hodder)
Be honest with yourself before taking Add Maths. It is roughly A Level difficulty compressed into O Level time, covering calculus, trigonometry, logarithms and binomial expansion. Students who are comfortable in ordinary maths find it opens doors — it makes A Level Maths and Physics considerably easier. Students who are already struggling should not take it to look impressive; a weak Add Maths grade helps nobody.
If you do take it, start in the first term. Add Maths is the subject where late starters almost never recover, because every topic builds on the one before.
How to Study Maths Properly
• Past papers from early on, not as a final-month exercise
• Work without the solution open. Looking at a worked answer feels like learning and isn't
• Keep a mistakes notebook. Your errors repeat; the notebook catches the pattern
• Time yourself. Most students who lose marks knew the method but ran out of time
• Write every step. Method marks are given even when the final answer is wrong
