FCPS Part 1 Books: What to Actually Buy
FCPS Part 1 is the gate. It is a basic-sciences paper sat by candidates from every specialty, and it fails more people than it should — not because the content is impossible, but because most candidates prepare for it the wrong way.

You Need Two Kinds of Book, Not Five
Candidates buy too many books. The structure that works is simple:
• One high-yield notes book to carry the content
• As many years of recalls as you can finish to carry the exam technique
Everything else is a reference you open when a recall question exposes a gap.
High-Yield Notes
• Radiant Notes (Dr. Rafiullah) — FCPS Pearls and FastAid, among the most widely used in Pakistan
• Tanveer Notes — concise, well organised, good for a second pass
• Double A Notes (Dr. Atif Afzal) — detailed two-volume set

Pick one as your main book. Reading three notes books is how candidates convince themselves they are working while covering the same ground three times.
Golden Files and Recalls
This is where the marks are. The SK series by Dr. Salahuddin Kamal is the best known: numbered volumes, each covering a block of papers, plus specialty-specific golden file compilations for Surgery, Medicine, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Gynae/Obs.
Also widely used: SK Golden, Gold Standard FCPS, and the specialty golden file sets.
Buy the newest volume. Recall books are republished as new papers are added, and the most recent papers repeat most often. An older edition is missing exactly the pages with the best chance of appearing in your exam.

How Many Years of Recalls Is Enough?
More than you are planning to do. Candidates who clear comfortably have usually worked through several years of papers, twice, with the most recent years done last so they are fresh.
The second pass matters more than the first. On the first pass you are learning the content; on the second you are learning the exam.
A Study Method That Works
• Attempt before checking. Always
• Work by topic so related questions reinforce each other
• Keep a mistakes list and revisit it weekly
• Look up only what you got wrong in your notes book
• Time yourself in the final month
• Do the most recent papers last
