FCPS Books in Pakistan: The Complete Guide for Part 1 and Part 2
Every FCPS candidate asks the same question in the first week of preparation: which books do I actually need? The honest answer surprises people. For FCPS, the textbook matters far less than the past papers.
This is our guide to what to buy and, just as important, how to use it. Everything mentioned is in stock at Javed Books, opposite Gangaram Hospital Outdoor Gate 5, Lahore. Browse the full range in our FCPS collection.
Why Past Papers Beat Textbooks in FCPS
FCPS is not an exam you can read your way through. The syllabus is enormous and the time is not. But the question pool is finite, and repeats are common.
A candidate who has worked through several years of recalls walks in recognising the shape of the questions. A candidate who has read three textbooks cover to cover meets them for the first time under exam pressure. That difference decides results far more often than raw knowledge does.
This is why the FCPS shelf in any Pakistani medical bookshop is dominated by golden files, recall compilations and high-yield notes rather than reference texts.
FCPS Part 1: What to Buy
Part 1 is a basic-sciences paper taken across every specialty. The winning combination is simple: one high-yield notes book, plus as many years of recalls as you can get through.
• Golden files and recalls: the SK series by Dr. Salahuddin Kamal, SK Golden, Gold Standard FCPS
• High-yield notes: Radiant Notes by Dr. Rafiullah, Tanveer Notes, Double A Notes by Dr. Atif Afzal, MNS High-Yield
• Secrets of FCPS Part 1 by Dr. Rabia Ali
• Basic sciences when you need depth: BRS Physiology, BRS Pathology, BRS Gross Anatomy, BRS Embryology, High-Yield Neuroanatomy, Snell Clinical Anatomy
Browse them all in FCPS Part 1 Books.
FCPS Part 2 and IMM: What to Buy
Part 2 and the Intermediate Module are specialty exams, assessed by written papers and TOACS stations. The books change character completely — you need specialty recalls, long-case guides and station books.
• Insight into FCPS-II past papers and recalls, by specialty
• Q-Bank pool question collections
• Long cases, clinical cases and TOACS station guides
• Radiant Notes IMM and FCPS-2, Medicoshare Notes, Saffron Series
Browse them in FCPS Part 2 & IMM Books.
By Specialty
• FCPS Gynae & Obs Books — including the SK Pearls (SK-Pink) series
• FCPS Surgery Books — golden files and pool questions
• FCPS Medicine Books — MCQ banks, long cases and TOACS
• Radiology, Anaesthesia, Cardiology, ENT, Paediatrics and Ophthalmology guides are all in the main FCPS collection
Always Buy the Latest Edition of a Recall Book
This is the one piece of advice people ignore and then regret. Recall books are republished every year because new papers are added. The most recent papers are the ones most likely to repeat.
An edition that stops two years short has removed precisely the highest-yield pages. Saving money on a used older edition is a false economy when the exam fee alone costs many times the difference.
How to Actually Study Them
Owning the books is not the same as using them. What separates candidates who clear from those who repeat is usually method.
• Attempt first, check after. Reading a question with the answer visible feels productive and teaches almost nothing
• Work by topic, not front to back. Finish one system, then move on
• Keep a list of what you got wrong and return to it — your mistakes repeat in a pattern
• Understand the stem, don't memorise the option. CPSP rewords questions; the concept carries over, the wording does not
• Do the recent years twice
• Use a textbook as a reference, not as the main study. Look up what you got wrong, then move on
• Start earlier than you think you need to. Nobody has ever cleared FCPS by starting in the last month
