Candidates who sailed through Part 1 often struggle with Part 2, and the reason is that they prepare for it the same way. It is a different exam. Part 1 rewarded recall of basic sciences; Part 2 and the Intermediate Module test whether you can manage a patient and defend your reasoning out loud.

What Changes After Part 1
• The exam is specialty-specific, so general notes books stop being useful
• Written papers are joined by TOACS stations and clinical assessment
• Marks come from structured answers, not from recognising an option
• Your daily clinical work becomes part of your preparation — or part of your problem
The Three Kinds of Book You Need
1. Specialty recalls and past papers. Insight into FCPS-II compilations, Q-Bank pool question collections, and the specialty golden files. Same logic as Part 1: repeats are common, so recalls are the highest-yield material available.
2. Long case and clinical case books. These teach you the structure of a case presentation — how to take the history, what to examine, how to present findings and how to justify a plan. Approach to Long Cases, Clinical Cases, and the specialty long-case guides.
3. TOACS station books. TOACS is its own skill. The stations are short, scripted and scored against a checklist, and candidates who have never practised against that format lose marks they clearly know. Station guides exist for Medicine, Obs/Gynae, Surgery and Paediatrics.

The Part That Books Cannot Do
Part 2 is the stage where reading alone stops working. You need to present cases out loud to someone who will interrupt you. Form a group, take turns being the examiner, and practise against a clock.
• Practise long cases on real patients in your own ward, not only from books
• Rehearse TOACS stations against a checklist and a timer
• Say your answers aloud — fluency under pressure is a separate skill from knowing
• Get a senior to watch you and be blunt about it
• Use recalls to find your weak topics, then read those specifically
