O Level Books in Pakistan: A Subject-by-Subject Buying Guide
Every O Level student in Pakistan hits the same wall in the first week: three or four different books exist for the same subject, the teacher has named one, the bookshop has another, and nobody explains the difference. This guide is our answer to that question, written from what students and parents actually ask us across the counter.
Everything below is in stock at Javed Books, opposite Gangaram Hospital Outdoor Gate 5, Lahore. You can see the whole range on our O/A Levels collection.
First, Understand the Four Publishers
Nearly every O Level book on the shelf comes from one of four houses, and they are built for different kinds of student.
• Cambridge University Press — "Coursebook": written by the same people behind the syllabus. Thorough, carefully worded, the safest match to the exam. Best if you want one book you can trust completely.
• Hodder Education — "Student's Book": clearer layout, shorter explanations, more worked examples. Best if the Cambridge book feels dense and you want to understand the concept faster.
• Oxford — "Complete": exam-skills focused, with strong revision and practice sections built in.
• Marshall Cavendish — "Matters": the Singapore series. Very strong on worked problems and question drilling, especially in the sciences.
There is no single right answer. A strong student often does best with Cambridge alone; a student who struggles with heavy text usually does better with Hodder plus past papers.
Biology, Chemistry and Physics
The sciences are where the choice matters most, because this is where most of the marks are lost.
• Hodder Cambridge O Level Biology
• Hodder Cambridge O Level Chemistry
• Hodder Cambridge O Level Physics
If you want heavier question practice alongside your main book, the Singapore Matters series is the one most science teachers in Lahore recommend as a second book:
• GCE O Level Biology Matters
• GCE O Level Chemistry Matters
• GCE O Level Physics Matters
• All About Chemistry O Level
Our advice: one main textbook plus past papers beats three textbooks. Buy the second book only once you have finished the first.
Mathematics and Additional Mathematics
• Cambridge O Level Mathematics Coursebook, 3rd Edition
• Hodder Cambridge O Level Mathematics, 2nd Edition — one of our best sellers
• Cambridge IGCSE and O Level Additional Mathematics Coursebook, 3rd Edition
• Cambridge IGCSE and O Level Additional Mathematics, 2nd Edition (Hodder)
If you are taking Add Maths, start it early. It is the one subject where students who begin in the last three months almost never recover the grade.
English Language
• Cambridge O Level English Language Coursebook, 3rd Edition
• Hodder Cambridge O Level English Language, 2nd Edition
English is marked on technique, not on how much you have read. Both books teach the directed-writing and comprehension formats the examiner is looking for.
Business, Commerce and Accounting
• Hodder IGCSE and O Level Business Studies, 6th Edition
• Commerce for Cambridge O Level Coursebook, 3rd Edition — a best seller with us
• Cambridge O Level Commerce Coursebook, 2nd Edition
• Cambridge IGCSE and O Level Accounting, 2nd Edition
• Complete Accounting for Cambridge IGCSE & O Level, 2nd Edition
Computer Science and History
• Hodder Cambridge IGCSE and O Level Computer Science, 2nd Edition
• Cambridge IGCSE and O Level History, 3rd Edition — Option B: The 20th Century
For History, check with your school which option they teach before buying. Option B is the one most Pakistani schools follow, but not all.
Islamiyat and Urdu
These two catch people out, because the syllabus code matters more than the title.
• Cambridge IGCSE & O Level Islamiyat
• Islamiyat For Students (O Level)
• Kawish-e-Jadeed — O Level Urdu Second Language, Syllabus 3248
• Cambridge IGCSE Urdu as a Second Language 0539 — Paper 1 and 2 Set
Urdu 3248 and Urdu 0539 are different syllabuses. 3248 is O Level, 0539 is IGCSE. Buying the wrong one is the single most common mistake we see, so check your entry slip or ask your coordinator first.
Edexcel Students
If your school follows Pearson Edexcel rather than Cambridge, the Cambridge books will not match your syllabus. For Edexcel Maths:
• Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9–1) Mathematics A — Student Book 1
• Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9–1) Mathematics A — Student Book 2
Four Things to Check Before You Buy
• The syllabus code. It is a four-digit number on your school's book list. It matters more than the book's title.
• The edition. Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle; an older edition can be missing whole topics.
• What your teacher actually teaches from. Following a different book than the class makes revision harder, not easier.
• One book, finished. Students who finish one textbook and two years of past papers beat students who own five books.
